Protein Supplements: The Basics

Protein Supplements: The Basics

Build lean muscle by knowing your protein supplements

Whey protein is by far the most well-known protein supplement used to increase lean body mass. It offers a rapidly absorbed form of protein perfect for immediately after workouts, aiding in the first phase of muscle recovery. But given the fact that most of the muscle regeneration occurs while resting, in the night hours, the fast acting whey protein is best stacked with a long term protein like casein.

Casein is a slow digesting and rich protein that is capable of feeding your muscles long after whey proteins have dropped off. Studies show casein can sustain steady amino acid elevations for an impressive 7 hours. The whey/casein stack has been shown to be quite an effective combination and have worked their way into most serious lifter’s supplement arsenal.

Other vegetable protein options are not as popular. Soy protein is commonly used instead of whey. There are several cons to using soy protein. Firstly soy protein contains phytoestrogens that influence estrogen levels leading to increased fat storage and even several forms of cancer such as breast cancer. Also, according to the National Institutes of Health, some people can even develop an enlarged thyroid while using soy products. Quite interestingly hemp, famous for its psychedelic flowers, provides an excellent protein source.

Hemp protein is among the most bio-available being utilized readily for tissue, muscle and hormone formation. Hemp protein also boasts an impressive amino acid profile and balance of essential fatty acids. In additions to these benefits, hemp seeds also contain essentials minerals like magnesium, iron and manganese. Unfortunately, being relatively expensive and bearing a strong taste akin to grass clippings, it is rarely chosen over less expensive and tastier whey products.
